MADISONVILLE KY ROTARY NEWSLETTER FOR WEEK OF              March 19, 2008

GUESTS - Prospective member Vickie Barnes, Assistant Vice President at Hancock Bank was a guest of Sharon Smith and Marion Miller.

BIRTHDAYS / ANNIVERSARYS / SPECIAL EVENTS - Nobody in attendance was admitting to celebrating a Birthday, Anniversary or having any special announcements they wanted to share with the club. Because so few members are confessing these events, the club Secretary will soon provide the President a list containing that information. So ‘fess up, and let’s start singing.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - Several announcements were made during the meeting including the following.

Jayne Barton on behalf of Margo passed around the sweat shirt list, sizes are needed to complete the order.

Shane Fortner announced the Rotary Auction solicitation packets will be given out at next week’s meeting.

Jayne Barton stated the Post Cards for the auction went out to remind Chamber members about the auction.

Jayne Barton acknowledged and thanked John Zieba for his generosity for donating his Billboard on Arch Street for one month for the Rotary Club to advertise the auction.

Rhonda Bryant, Rotary Secretary, shared the 501(C)(3)will be mailed and post marked this week, thus making it okay for us to solicit TAX FREE Donations.

Contact one of the Auction Co-chairs Charlie Willett, Sandi Brooks, or Shane Fortner if you have any questions about what you can do to help with Rotary Auction 2008.

Sharon Smith is the Blacksheep Chairperson for this year’s Rotary Auction. Sharon is asking each Rotarian who is able to donate $100 to Blacksheep in addition to any auction items you may buy or donate. Sharon hopes all Madisonville Rotarians will be able to become Century Club members!

If you have an up coming program, but do not have a guest speaker, Kent has a Rotary DVD that can be used for an informational program.

When you invite someone to Rotary, be sure to give them a brochure and an application to fill out.

Everybody is doing great wearing your Rotary Badges during the meeting! Keep up the new habit!

Don’t forget… the Hopkins County Long Term Disaster Recovery Corporation who has helped 200 families from the 2005 Tornado and 4 families from the recent most recent tornados, on April 6th will have a benefit concert at HCCHS, Country Music Singer John Berry will be performing, and tickets are $15.

MADISONVILLE ROTARY HISTORY MOMENT - Our Historian, Blis Powell was in attendance at Wednesday’s Rotary Club meeting. It appeared the GAG order had been lifted because Blis did speak. Blis was president of our Rotary Club waaaay back in 1971. He said his goal as President then was 1 for 1 in 1971. It was the idea of Rotarian Joe Jones. Trice Yates brought in the most new members.
Blis mentioned in 1941 our Rotary Club was chartered and we didn’t have a banner until Joe Jones designed our banner.

Blis I am curious, did I misunderstand, did you to say you were President in 1971 or Joe Jones?

Seriously, thanks for sharing the memories Blis and for being such a good sport. We can always learn something new from listening to our elders and how the things we take for granted everyday came to be.

PROGRAM - Jayne Barton and Kent Waide were responsible for the program.
Kent Waide introduced Trish Noel, the director of the Hopkins County Tourism and Convention Commission, located at 15 East Center Street. Trish is married to former Rotary President Ronnie Noel. Trish is very enthusiastic about Hopkins County and that Hopkins County is a great place to be, she invites you to visit the website at www.hopkinscountytourism.com Trish brought with her and presented a copy of the “Project Budget” for the proposed Youth Sports Complex which was prepared by Associated Engineers, INC.

Upcoming Programs/Events - Please be sure to attend next Wednesday. Don Ershig is scheduled to speak and update the club on the status of his Mid-Town Commons commercial development.
